Why? Why? Why????
I have a snake plant, (or mother-in-law‘s tongue) as I was taught it is. This plant has been passed down through my family for over 100 years by pieces is being given to children and grandchildren. My plant has been going fine for years but now it’s beginning to look like this. Could anyone tell me why and what I could do to fix it? Thank you all in advance!

I agree with Sharon that the plant looks like it needs a bigger pot.
This plant needs to be repotted in a larger pot with completely new potting mix. It also needs better light. I have this plant (Sansevieria) growing outdoors in a number of places in my garden. It likes shade with good ambient light or even some full sun. I have a number of large indoor plants. The best way to water them (including this one) is to wait until the soil is dry, and then take them outside and stand the pot in a bucket of water for half an hour. Remove the pot from the bucket, let it drain, and bring it inside. Don't listen to people who say give it a cup of water a week etc. I find that this kind of instruction never works. Also, put the plant outside sometimes during warm rain, even heavy rain; my indoor plants really respond to this. Fertilize occasionally; this plant doesn't need much.
Hi Rosaline, it looks like your snake plant needs a bigger home This video will show you how you can report her, so she'll be around for many more years - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3mRWf--5-8
It definitely needs a bigger pot.
Yup, root bound, get a larger pot and replant. Here is a link for caring for your plant:

Repotting a Snake Plant

I would repot it
Root bound. Needs a bigger pot.
Try splitting up, I think it has outgrown that pot. It’s a really cool story. Maybe it’s time to pass more of it along.
The plant is too big for that small pot. You need to get some miracle grow soil and put it in a big pot. When you do, make sure you start out new smaller pots to share. I lost my MIL plant from the freeze last february. I was shocked when it came back from the roots. I keep mine outside.
I'd also add that you should remove (carefully!) brown leaves. I have noticed some in the background.
After re-potting it, I would mix a mild batch of Miracle Grow, as the old soil is probably pretty depleted.
This is root bound and might be getting too much water.
