A Simple Thrift Store Box Looks High End With Stenciling and Plaster
by
Victoria Larsen Stencils
(IC: professional)
From plain to fancy with paint, a plaster stencil and a plaster mold.
It was pretty beat up but was made of solid wood and was in great shape. And it only cost me $3.00! Ah, a new project for paint and plaster!
The box front had a recessed opening in it so I used a Raised Plaster Stencil with joint compound to create a design on either side of the recess.
I primed the box and cast an ornamental square piece from a plaster mold. Once it was dry, I also primed it. My intention was to place it over the recess to hide it.
I first painted the entire box and ornamental piece a pretty sea green color and then used metallic gold paint on the box trim, plaster stenciling and ornamental plaster piece. I glued it in place over the recess in the box and Tah Dah! What a great new display box for treasures.
Enjoyed the project?

Katrina Warren on Jan 30, 2015@Victoria Larsen Stencils What is the difference in a plaster stencil & a regular stencil, or are they basically the same thing?

Victoria Larsen Stencils on Jan 30, 2015@Katrina Warren Standard stencils don't work with plasters very well because they don't hold up to scraping. Also, some stencil designs aren't laid out well for plastering. There have to be strong separations in the design or you wind up with just a "blob" of plaster with no definition. Though you can use some stencils for plasters, you may not get the desired results.

Katrina Warren on Jan 30, 2015@Victoria Larsen Stencils Thanks for the information, I checked out your web site but since it only shows the result of the stencils I wasn't sure if there was a difference. They definitely add a lot of extra beauty to some projects!
