Bmaier5 on Aug 09, 2015I also have this problem all throughout the the first floor of my home. I experimented on the laundry room by painting the ceiling completely with white paint and then painted the walls yellow. The room looks so bright and much bigger. I am considering tackling my girls room now but I am nervous to over do it since wood beam ceilings are an asset. The "dark dungeon" feeling is driving me nuts.Helpful Reply

Duv310660 on Aug 09, 2015Definitely try a wash/dry brush/or paint on and ragged off. It's one of the easiest things to do, looks great.Helpful Reply

Michele Felmingham on Aug 13, 2015Hello Gilly. Similar problem. Thinking of whitewashing ceiling (Cabot's limewash I think but may just do a practice with dulux 3 in 1 also) and just clear varnishing beams after sanding them lightly. I've done this to a few beams and it inhibits cobwebs which high ceilings attract. I also find that the wood ceilings draw up a lot of available light. I already have white walls but am thinking of putting just a touch of lilac into the white to make it look a bit warmer. White white looks a bit harsh.Helpful Reply

Cynthia H on Aug 15, 2015Had you thought about just painting the lower parts (I'm not sure if it's called an apron, but the part of wood that has the paint marks on it) and seeing if you like it better. Then, if you want to lighten the ceiling itself, I've seen beautiful ones done with a bluish white wash (sorry no pics) and even a shade of blue that really made it pop.Helpful Reply
