I recently found this piece at my favorite second hand store for $50.00. It was too cool not to grab. It was dinged up and old, but a very cool find. I figured I'd do it over and end up just selling it. However, my husband has convinced me we should keep this one. I'm happy he did, she's pretty cool now.
I gave it a quick sanding to remove scratches and dings and get a good base for the paint to stick to.
Doors removed and sanded down
I gave it a coat of white primer to start. Once dried, I did a light dry brush using Rustoleum Metallic Paint - the color is Pewter. Following that, I dry brushed using a in a dark grey color. I dry brushed over much of the metallic to tone it done but to allow it to peek through in some areas. The dry brushing was done spottily, not uniform painting. I then went over the entire piece with Black Wax that I mixed some Mineral Spirits into to make it easier to work with. Waxed lightly and rubbed off right away leaving just a light black waxing behind.
Once I was happy with the finish outside, I turned to the inside of the doors and drawers. I should mention, I spray painted the hardware with Rustoleum Primer Flat Black and then blended some of the pewter into it to make it pop.
I painted the inside shelves the same as the outside. For the doors inside I painted in the grey color and then did the harlequin pattern using pewter, some white over top, again painted spottily. Then I used some black wax, mixed slightly with some Mineral Spirits over the doors inside to make them look old.
On the top shelf I decoupaged a piece of tissue to add a bit of pop.
I did the same thing in the drawers as I did in the doors. I made the pattern smaller to match the size.
To totally complete the project, I did the entire back as well using the same method as the doors and drawers.
