You can definitely put together a bench super fast with some 2x4's and plywood. I suppose it depends how the bench will be used and where it will be, how finished you'd like to make it.
Outdoors, use blocks and 2x8 or appropriate size 2x lumber in desired length.
Indoors, you can probably pick up a kit cheaper than you can build one but not as sturdy. Here's a simple tutorial on drawing a bench that you could use as a guide to build as well. Just go with a solid back for a quicker build.
