After moving into our Farmhouse, I discovered two old doors on the rafters in the barn, that were original to the house. This would make them now 85 years old!
My two old doors
After cleaning many years of dirt and grime from the doors, I discovered the smaller white door had some fire damage, and I had to cut part of it off. It left me with 45-inches, which is loveseat size, so that was still a good size. The other door was wider, and very heavy, so it would become the sides and hold the weight of the bench.
One side. Notice the original hardware?
After cutting the sides and sanding, I cut 2x4's to fit to each side panel. This would hold the seating. For the seating, I used two 2x6 boards cut in 45" lengths. I cut two more, and used one across the front of the bench seat for stability, and placed one between the two sides at the bottom for bracing and extra overall stability to the bench. I next fit the small door as the back of the bench in place.
Almost done!
I cut two 1x4" boards to make arm rests, and then the last step is painting!
I'm happy to say that everything used in this project was recycled from my barn. Nothing was purchased to use.
Suggested materials:
  • 2 old doors, 2x4s, and 2x6's   (Recycled from my barn)

Looks great! Turned out amazing. Can't tell it was made out of doors.

You'll be so glad you did it. Just don't put it off too long, like I did. I love sitting on my bench with my little dog, while I read and she gazes around the yard.
