We moved into our home recently and the back yard is pretty bare although what God put there is spectacular. We have a view of Mt Rainier and a creek and forest. So I having been trying to improve it on a budget.
Last weekend there was a huge yard sale. I was able to pick up a few items for free. One of the things we got was an old water bed frame. It occurred to me that we could use it to create raised beds for some vegetables and flowers.

Waterbed frame
We first took the drawers out of the frame. The dimensions on each box are 144" x 26" x 6" deep.
Then I stapled a screening material to prevent the pesky moles we have occasionally in our yard.
We laid them down on a flat prepared area. The bed came with boards normally used to support the mattress. We cut them in half and covered the holes left by the drawers. Then we laid a base of card board which will help with weeds and become compost. Next we filled them with good quality potting mix. Our neighbor was kind enough to loan us his truck and wheel barrow so we could buy in bulk.

We filled the beds with soil and watered thoroughly. Then the fun began. I planted mostly from seed but did put in some broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce. I am so pleased with the improvements to our yard and can't wait for the harvest.
We now have planted our fall vegetables:. Broccoli, cauliflower and carrots are thriving.

Eventually i suppose it will. But all raised beds are made with wood

I have read about people doing raised gardens with drawers before but this waterbed idea is FANTASTIC as you have the ftame and the drawers! I will be on the look out for a free waterbed frame! Thank you!
