How do I remove paint from a bathtub that has been painted?
My husband and I bought a house that was built in 1973. The people who owned the house before us painted the bathtub which is either cast iron or porcelain. The paint is beginning to flake off. I was wondering how can I remove the rest of the paint from the tub.

Hi Tina, it sounds pretty serious if you want to do it right but all the prep would really be worth it in the end: https://bathrenovationhq.com/blog/stripping-refinished-bathtub/
I found this video, which will show how to remove it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmZgeevrEMI
First, take a plastic scraper and flake off as much loose as possible. You might also use some fine steel wool. Then you can use acetone to try and remove what is still bonded. it is most likely epoxy. You can also use Xylene.

Looking at all of the above and still don't know what type of paint it is, you will have all sorts of metal scratches in the tub with a scraper and grey mess from the steel wool. I might consider having the tub done professionally when you clean up the mess of flaking paint. They refinish and most give some type of warranty.
Been there...It's a tough job and one that requires good ventilation no matter what product you use. You also run the risk of scratching the tub. I would also consider the fact that the tub may have been painted to hide a mess. So you may go through all that work to find a tub that needs to be painted again or is beyond repair. It might be worth it to price a new tub.
I used citrus paint remover. https://amzn.to/336VUNn
We recently had a professional repaint our tub and he used CITRUS STRIP to take off the old paint.
Have you seen this video? It was kind of amazing to watch it!

I agree with Kim. If the tub is original to the home, circa 1973, it likely has seen better days underneath the paint. I would advise to replace the tub entirely instead of spending money and time trying to revitalize it.
