How can I prevent mineral water spots on my dishes - the hard water in my area just leaves spots and brown spots everywhere I am a renter so I can't put in a water softener/ Thanks

  • You can buy a rinse aid for your dishwasher to prevent the spots. Also use less dishwasher detergent and don't overload it.

Use of a rinse aid can improve wash and dry performance by causing the water to sheet off of the dishes inside the dishwasher. This prevents water spots from forming on the glassware and dishware.

Another causes of spots could be:

    • Sandy grit left on dishes is from water not being hot enough to dissolve liquid or dry detergent. The water coming into the dishwasher should be a minimum of 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
    • To check the water temperature, run the hot water at the kitchen sink and measure the temperature of the running water with a canning or meat thermometer. Adjust the temperature of the water heater accordingly.
    • To be sure that the dishwasher is filling with the hottest possible water, run the hot water faucet at the kitchen sink prior to operating the dishwasher. Also, avoid running the dishwasher while hot water is being used for other activities.

Hello, white distilled cleaning vinegar is your new best friend. Add a cup of it to a cup or bowl loaded in the top of your dishwasher so that as the dishwasher runs some of the vinegar will overflow into the machine. Also, as you're handwashing items adding whie vinegar to dishwater and rinse water will help to alleviate the staining, plus it serves as a disinfectant. Very inexpensive to try to see if it helps you with your problem. Also you can purchase products to use in the dishwasher to remove spots.

You can remove the buildup caused by calcium and magnesium ions in hard water by swabbing the glass with acetone (nail polish remover), and then scrub gently with a mild detergent. Soaking the glasses in plain white distilled vinegar for 15 minutes is another effective home remedy

Use a spot remover for the dishwasher, I like Lemi shine, you can get that in your grocery store. Add some white vinegar to the dishwasher. I spray mine with white vinegar between usage.

Most dishwasher pods contain a rinse agent. Just read the box before buying. Rinse aid is another type of surfactant, but one that aims to reduce the surface tension enough that the tiny water droplets that form on the surface of dishes are rinsed away. When those drops are encouraged to wash away before they naturally evaporate and leave deposits, your dishes are left looking even cleaner!

I had that problem and then realized that I needed to add a rinse aid like Cascade or Finish liquid to my machine. It made a big difference!

We have hard water and using a rinse aid has made a huge difference.

  • We have hard water by us too. If you're using the dishwasher, put vinegar in the rinse aid area. You can also wipe things down with vinegar and a rag too.
