Halloween Inspiration and DIY No-Sew Napkins
There’s something about fall that has me yearning to stop time. Perhaps it’s the stained glass colors of the trees, the cool crispness of the air, the comfort of anything made with apples, or even the warmth of a cashmere sweater. Dare I say that fall is my favorite season. However, I fear I get all Grinch-like when Halloween rolls around. Not my favorite holiday, so when the Little Miss asked me if we could throw a Halloween party for she and her friends, I gritted my teeth and sheepishly responded, sure….
I’ve shared this before, and I’ll share it again; I’m not a fan of Halloween. Anything creepy and that reeks havoc on my diet – I’m out. So, this year, diving in and doing my best to stay away from being passive aggressive, I set out to make this creepy holiday be somewhat sparkly, and perhaps even bring some levity to the creepy.
As with all holidays, my decorating always begins with the table. For me, the table setting sets the mood, even if no meal is shared. Here, it’s all about the black and white with a pop of green.
With faux black flowers arranged in a mercury glass vase for starters, along with some black crows added in, this sets the tone for the centerpiece.
And really, what’s Halloween without some skeletons? Even plastic, they’re a little sore on my eyes, so I took the bone by the horns (pardon the pun) and I bedazzled with some green glitter. Using an inexpensive artist’s paintbrush and some Elmer’s glue, simply brush on the glue in even strokes and sprinkle the glitter on evenly.
I take pride in unconventional table settings, and this Halloween table decor is no different. Heading straight to the fabric store to find a black with a calico flair fabric for the tablecloth, I also set out to find fabric for some DIY napkins, and I found this classic black and white ticking stripe. This is a practice that I often lean to, not really because of budget reasons (although I’m always in favor), but because I’m always after that custom look.
For the DIY no sew napkins, cut the fabric into 20″ x 20″ squares. I recommend using a rotary cutter for faster and more precise cutting.
With the help of seam binding ribbon, place the ribbon in the fold and iron over until the two sides bind together.
It’s that easy. No need to thread a needle and / or bobbin. Can be washed and dried in machines. Iron as needed. Easy peasy.
