My dad loves to spend time in yard enjoying the sunshine, gardening, and taking care of his lawn. One Father's Day I was trying to think of a good gift for him. I brainstormed ideas related to the backyard and came up with the idea to decorate and fill a flower pot him.

Start with a plain pot. You may even have an extra one lying around in the yard. Be sure to wash it off first.

Gather your paints and sealers. I like to use Mod Podge as a sealer.

I like to use big brushes for the majority of the project and small ones for touch ups.

With the kids, I painted a plain terra cotta flower pot with acrylic paints and then had them add their handprints.

Since then, I have made other decorated flower pots. These make great gifts for Mother's Day, Father's Day, birthdays, and more.

Head over to the blog post to get more ideas and instructions.

Once everything is dry, you can them plant something in the pots.

Depending on the climate and the time of year, your options vary.

For my dad's flower pot, we planted basil.

You could even plant some fruit or vegetables in a decorated pot, if you use a big enough pot.

Here in Texas, spring is strawberry season. As a fun Mother's Day gift, you could decorate a flower pot for Mom and then plant some strawberry seeds or plants.

You can also decoupage pictures, mementos, baseball cards and more, similar to the method I use to decorate gift boxes
