Spring Garden Pallet Sign
Spring is in the air...finally after a long, snowy Winter! The absence of color really makes me crave for some early "signs" of color in the garden, pardon the pun! I found a half of a pallet lying around outside and thought it might be a little, compact item to make a garden sign with. I don't have a before pic but here is an image of what I'm referring to, I think you all can picture it anyhow.
Next, I went rummaging through my craft supplies to see what idea I could come up with. I had all of my wooden items together in a basket, in there I found some thrift store birds and dollar store wood pieces to create some flower shapes with.
On towards the assembling, I used wood glue of course for this. I glued circles and ovals together to create the flowers, the circles held the six petals together easily.
My brother-in-law builds garden furniture and paints it beautiful, bright colors so I asked for some small samples of his exterior paint for little projects just like this one.
* A suggested tip would be to recycle pill bottles to store small amounts of paint you collect or mix up for craft projects.
*Another tip is that I use cheap vinyl tablecloths, usually bought at dollar stores to protect my work surface when I paint.
Once they were painted I placed them outdoors to dry, the pallet is underneath looking weathered and gray from being outside. I was aiming to paint a pair of American Goldfinches and a robin working with the exact colors I had. But dont feel you are limited if you have just 2 or 3 colors!
* Another tip is that you can make new colors by blending together whatever you have to get varied colors!
For the lettering I used a cardstock stencil set, it should be found at your local dollar store or maybe online. I used it to pencil trace out each letter and use as my guide to paint free hand. I glued the wooden shapes on with more wood glue but realized after I "should" have used liquid nails....they fell off after a few months outside.
I love bright colors, I usually aim to create something new each year for this backyard space. The butterfly is just a metal dollar store find, the old wheelbarrow and shovel got a little splash of color as well just to coordinate everything. The stepping stone colors had all faded out so that got a paint refresher along with a top coat of spray vararthane to protect it. I've posted on how I did this many times in the past to save a stepping stone.

I hope this has inspired you to create a little color in a corner of your garden to welcome Spring back to your home!
