This post will show you how to style a dresser in three different ways so that you can choose the one that matches your design aesthetic and make the most of that precious little space. Use your dresser to create a focal point by putting together decor vignettes, making a vanity and displaying makeup and accessories or showcasing your book collection.
Look 1: Decor Vignette

Display pictures, ornaments and create an interesting display. Find out more about how to create decor vignettes. (https://diyinadorm.wordpress.com/2016/05/04/how-to-create-a-vignette/)
DIY art like this gold leaf art can add a nice personal touch to your decor.
Keep fresh flowers around whenever possible. If taking out the time to buy new ones and replace old ones on time is a commitment you can’t make, go for potted plants- especially, those that require little care, like succulents. You can also opt for faux flowers. I’m a big fan of silk flowers-no care required and they look just as beautiful as real ones.
Look 2: Vanity

If the dresser is in your bedroom, consider making it into a vanity. The accessories that you use frequently can be kept on the top, while most of the makeup and jewelry can be stored in the drawers. Bonus point- they will be safe from dust.
Use items like these nifty chevron trays or make your own catchalls to coral similar things together.

Look 3: Books

Display your favorite volumes along with some artistic pieces and add some candles to create a cozy atmosphere.

I thought a dresser was the long piece of furniture with the tall mirror, chest of drawers is just that, without a mirror, and what you are decorating is a nightstand. Am I incorrect?

I think what you are talking about is calling a 'dressing table'. A dresser is just a chest of drawers where we keep clothes etc and nightstands are smaller. :)
