Why do pictures stick to the glass in the frames?

I am devastated. I wanted to move a treasured family photo to a new frame, and when I tried to remove it, the picture stuck to the glass and now it’s damaged. Why does this happen and how can I prevent it in the future?

It is common for the slick face on the photograph to stick to the glass. A frame shop will be able to solve the problem on a new photo. I would take your current keep sake photo to a professional to se if anything can be down.
i know use a matte board to keep photos away from the glass.
Matting a photo will prevent it. Humidity and no space in the frame usually cause this.
It's caused by moisture and the fact that there is no space between the photo and the glass.
Go on line and check out photo resturation where you can upload your photo, and they will fix it. It is not expensive.
Hi Danielle: I've had this happen all too often :( What I did was to place it in the freezer for an hour, wearing rubber gloves to protect hands in the event glass breaks, remove the photo and glass from the freezer, and open the paper, gently pull up on the corner of the photo, it should come away from the glass.
Good luck
A photo gets stuck to glass because there is a lack of airspace between the photo and the image. When moisture gets behind the glass, the photo emulsion will become gelatinous and adhere to the glass as it dries. This type of damage can happen over time or instantly.
Maybe the glass was cleaned before the picture was added and Not quite dry!
Maybe if you can take the picture to a Photography or Print shop they Might be able to help you.....
You could also see if there's a conservator type person in your area as they may be able to help. I'm sure this is super upsetting and so sorry it happened!
Freeze the picture in the glass frame and peel off gently, then to correct the situation, remount it with a matt to keep the picture off the glass.
The main cause of photos sticking to glass is typically humidity. The photograph will eventually attach to the glass if it is framed in a way that leaves no gap between the glass and the image (not even a small amount). Glossy photos are especially prone to this issue.
Humidity is usually the culprit and the reason why pictures stick to glass.
If your house is humid or where it was stored was humid, that could cause the photo to stick, or if it was stacked there might be enough pressure on it to stick it to the glass.
Always Matt old photos to keep them away from the glass. Do not place the frames in areas near the bathroom or kitchen which has extra humidity.
