What to give a friend who just bought her first home with her family? Some simple supplies and a quilt block design provided the perfect inspiration for a special gift for a special family!

A good friend of mine recently bought her first home with her family. I wanted to give them a special gift, but didn't want to buy something from a store. My friend loves the farmhouse style and I had seen a lot of great signs that had pegs or knobs for hanging keys and such on them. I thought this might be a great gift for a new home.

I also love quilt designs. I though it would be cute to make a sign with a quilt block and use a photo of their daughter for the center of the quilt block.

So I gathered my supplies:

  • a wood board that was about 8 inches by 14 inches
  • the word "home" laser cut from wood that I bought at the craft store
  • 3 decorative knobs
  • a photo of my friend's daughter
  • some scrapbook paper
  • white glue and Mod Podge

First, I had my husband drill two holes in my wood for hanging. Then I painted my wood board a gray color to make my quilt block stand out. Next, I painted my wooden "home" piece a light yellow color.

To make my quilt block, I took some thin wood pieces and cut them to be the pieces that made up my quilt block. I painted the edges of these wood pieces black and covered the tops with decorative scrapbook paper.

I also cut a square piece of wood for the photo of my friend's daughter. I attached this photo and the scrapbook paper to the wood using Mod Podge.

I measured and placed these quilt pieces on the left center of my sign.

Once my quilt block was in place, I added my "home" sign and my three knobs to the bottom of the sign.

I braided some twine and ran it through the drilled holes to use as a hanger, but I think my friend will either screw or nail this sign to the wall.

I hope she loves this sign and it brings her family happiness in their new home!
