It feels like I’ve been making masks forever! I started making them after the pandemic hit because my cousin Sarah needed them for the hospital she works at. Sarah is a nurse, so it was important for me to help her and the other essential workers. After working on those masks, I started making them for family and friends and trying different patterns. This DIY Fabric Face Mask is easy to make and I’ve included three free patterns in different sizes.
Print and cut out the free mask pattern available on the blog.
Cut out 4 pieces of the face mask pattern. Sew two pieces together, right sides in. All the patterns are to be sewn with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Open the two face mask pieces and place together, right sides in. The easiest way to line up the mask is by lining up the corners first.
Add the elastic for the mask between the two pieces of fabric. I pinned the elastic to show you how to place it between the fabric.
After you have the pieces lined up, it’s time to sew! Sew around the mask, leaving about a 2″ opening.
Pull the mask out through the opening and sew all the way around.

Your technique for turning the mask inside out before finishing has the potential to produce a more comfortable mask for the wearer, as there is no scratchy or stiff binding around the edges.
