How do I add shoe storage to our small entry way?

we live in a mini home and our entry way is a 4 x 4 area of ceramic flooring any suggestions so we dont walk in on top of shoes

IKEA makes a very thin wall cabinet for shoes.
Vertical wire shelving set atop a boot tray or substantial area rug would also be another option.

Is there any possibility of 'borrowing' some space between the 2x4's to create recessed storage?
I love the idea of a storage bench.
