Learn how to make a graphic arch rug from a cheap flatwoven IKEA rug!

I got the IKEA TIPHEDE rug in Natural/Black because it seemed like a good blank canvas to create a painted arch design. And at $9.99, it wouldn’t be a problem if this hack turned out horribly wrong, which I’m glad to say it didn’t!!

Find the detailed step-by-step here!

Watch the video tutorial for a quick glimpse of this easy DIY!

Before you start, lay down a drop cloth or some cardboard under the rug to protect the floor while you paint.

To draft the arch design, attach a piece of string to a pen to create a long-range compass. Draw arches on each short side of the rug.

Paint the arches with diluted black acrylic paint. Repeat on the opposite side and let the paint dry fully before removing the dropcloth.

Don’t forget to paint the edges! It’s easily overlooked but lifting the rug to apply a bit of black paint on the edge will help the design look woven instead of painted on.
