While riding around I found this tree in a neighbor’s yard. We have been looking for a mid-size three to replace our dying eucalyptus. I will hate to see this beautiful creature leave our yard but we were told it is all but ready to go. It throws the most beautiful shade but very hard to find ppl to come and give it a pruning and grooming. So, we will remove and replace with this. (Pictured) Can anybody tell us what it is? It has holly like berries. The leaves are soft not prickly. Thank you! What is

What kind of three is this... anybody know?

  • It's hard to tell without a close-up of the leaves. Take a closer picture and try this link:

Since the picture is rather far way can't really ID it but take a small branch into your local extension agent or master gardner.

Try taking a close up picture and then do a google lens search.

I would knock on their door and ask them we can't identify it without a closer and clearer look - you could try going to a local plant nursery and showing them the photo

Try your local botanical office or an arborist. Add a close up leaf photo and someone might be able to help here. You could also contact your local college and find a professor who teaches earth science. I remember having to I D trees as part of our classwork. We had a book, which I no longer have, which walked you through the process step by step. You might be able to pick one up at the library.

You might ask a tree service company to id it, they are good with what type of trees there are in your area.

From plant id it seems to want to come up with some type of laurel. Either English Common or Bay laurel. Its so beautiful. I did talk to homeowner and he too has no idea. LOL so we will continue to search for this beauties name.

Thanks for the suggestions .. I will look into all of them..

Call your County Extension Agent. They may be able to assist in how to prune/trim youor current tree and make it come back beautifully. Also, if you do actually take it out, provide close-up and ful lpictures of the one you admire and find out exactly what it is and if it will do well in your soil and light conditions.

It looks like a Laurel to me? Which zone are you in?

  • Lyn D Lyn D on May 25, 2022

We are in zone 9, I do think it is a laurel, maybe an english laurel. The leaves are so pretty. The bay laurel has thinner leaves and the common laurel has wider leaves, at least from what I have researched. But I did notice a cherry laurel, and this one does have some sort of berry. I truly believe it comes from the laurel family lol

    I did read this on .... https://www.externalworksindex.co.uk

Common Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus 'Rotundifolia') is an evergreen shrub that makes a bright, dense hedge. Also known as Cherry Laurel it has shiny thick and leathery green leaves.

So common and cherry are the same thing ... I guess.

This was a tree but some shrubs can become trees if pruned the right way.

Your county agents might have a specialist that will stop by and give you knowledge for free. Where do you live? That would be helpful.

I have checked into that, and took it to 2 nurseries - plant.id is my best bet. Thanks Ann
