Janet Pizaro on Oct 07, 2015In my opinion I dont think you should cover this,I think you should look into removing it. There probably is bad chemicals in there which are a hazard to your health.Helpful Reply

Z on Oct 07, 2015If it was installed before the mid eighties, I'd leave it be, as it more than likely has asbestos added to it. Believe me, that's nothing to mess with, as I saw what it did to my Daddy's lungs just from working near it, never with it. His lung X-rays were almost all black from the slow decay from the asbestos he inhaled while repairing airplanes during WWII. I suggest you contact the HSE in the UK and find out what is the next step you should take. I tried to read the UK Control of Asbestos Regulations of 2012, but with other legal stuff, it was all Greek to me. I know in the US at one time they said it was better to leave intact asbestos in place, instead of removing it because in breaking it up to remove it caused the particles to become airborne which once inhaled is very dangerous. It's a known carcinogen and you don't want to mess with it.Helpful Reply

B. Enne on Oct 07, 2015Kim I had mine tested for asbestos and lead before removing it. Like @Z said you can't take any chances...I just lost a friend to Mesothilioma. She and her brother got it from the asbestos fibres their father brought home from his job when they were children.Helpful Reply

HouseLogic.com on Oct 08, 2015You can cover it with faux tin ceiling tiles. They're pretty cheap and fairly easy to DIY. You can see how one HomeTalk user used them to transform her ceiling here: http://goo.gl/32Gy3IHelpful Reply

LD on Oct 08, 2015The easiest and cheapest way is to have them skim coated. If these ceilings date back to the mid 1980's and before contain white asbestos in order to strengthen it.Helpful Reply

Cathy Bailey on Oct 08, 2015How about covering it with fabric? Muslim is very inexpensive and comes in wide widths. White sheets can be dyed. Just staple it up or use brass colored tacks.Helpful Reply

Jan Munroe on Oct 10, 2015The foam tiles also insulate and look like the tin tiles. They are made in Sweden I think, Anyway, in Europe somewhere. LOLHelpful Reply

Liliana Wells on Oct 10, 2015If you want to remove it see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SldbUcEjtvE. Otherwise, cover your ceiling with ceiling tiles. Google "ceiling tiles" to see what's available. They can be purchased online or look into your local DIY stores.Helpful Reply
