How can I makeover my fireplace to be more to my taste?
My fireplace is builders special. It has no character it is a raised fireplace.Can I replace the mantle with a thick chunky wood? And place tiles that look similar to the kitchen counter.

Hi Karen, I think you certainly can, pick the wood you like and consider painting the existing same as the tiles in your kitchen painting cleans things up cheaply and costs way less than replacing
Please post a picture of your fireplace and the surrounding walls so that we can see what type of space you have to work with.
You will want to choose decorating elements that compliment the rest of the room, rather than changing the look of only the fireplace in isolation.
You can install a chunky piece of wood for a mantle. You might consider stenciling the existing tiles to make the fireplace unique and to your taste. Once you decide on how you want it to look, then of course you can make it happen.
You could also paint it or whitewash the bricks. Replacing the mantle I would think would be easy, just remove the old one and then there are plenty of online tutorials for creating a new one and adhering it in place.
