Helping my friend redo her fireplace. She wants a whitewash look. I want shelves brightened to match.

These days, most whitewashing is done with diluted white paint. If you want just a light coat, use 4 parts water to one part paint. 50/50 would have a heavy frosted look. And 1:4 water to paint would cover almost all the rock with white with some rock showing, like an Italian plastered wall that is beginning to crumble. Choose your look and start mixing. ☺️

Remember, you can never go back if you don't like the painted brick look. Brick is porous, and it will take a lot more diluted paint than you think.

I'd rather see the brass painted black. The bookcase painted white and a larger white mantle with the brick left alone.

Of course your reply would be in that vein. You claim to be a painter - more jobs/money for you. Let the questioner decide. I just gave my opinion and an alternative... BTW: I'm a gal.

I agree with Sal. White bookcase, white mantle, black brass and leave the brick, or "grey" it.

I just watched an episode of Home Town and she white washed the fireplace. 1/2 latex white and 1/2 water. She wire brushed and then swept fireplace off and applied from top to bottom with a large (looked like a car wash sponge) and dabbed the brick. Looked very nice, she wanted to tone down the red brick colour. It worked

Also on that same show I saw and you could use it also paint the shelves and put wallpaper on the back of them just for color and some interest. .also what's above your mantle a mirror? To small, mantle to small need to be chunky. Picture maybe. .and please move the TV wrong place.

I personally would paint the fire 🔥 place a light grey and the mantle white and that bookcase paint that white and take out one of the shelves (center one) and add the tv into that to make that whole wall a focal point and it will brighten the room up and turn the sofa facing or at an angle. White washing is a lot of work being brick is porous and tends to give it a dirty look next to the dark bookcase.
