SPARKLiNG SPiT Coffee Table
From boring coffee table to functional art with Unicorn SPiT
Here's the cute little coffee table I found for $20. Lola is checking it for quality control and gives it two paws up!
I gave it a good cleaning with Krud Kutter followed by some warm water and blue Dawn until my paper towels were no longer brown. Prep is key, regardless of what method you use to refinish.
Next I applied two coats of Flaming Rosie Unicorn SPiT SPARKLiNG Gel STAiN. Yes- right over the clean surface of the table, without stripping or sanding. That said, if the table did not have a smooth surface, I would have sanded it smooth. In this case, there was no need.
Next I decided to add some whimsy and drew some swirls with Ravenous Raven Unicorn SPiT SPARKLiNG Gel STAiN. While still wet, I added some gold paint into the design to give dimension. Once dry, I used a little trick to get the Ravenous Raven to sparkle, and that is to rub it with 0000 steel wool. (This releases the sparkles and is only necessary with this color and Crow).
The edges of the table and table base were painted with Carbon L'Essentiel Botanics Furniture Paint. I love the pure black darkness of this paint. Again, no need to sand!
Now it's time to seal the top with Famowood two part Epoxy. Follow the directions in the package for mixing directions and time. You can feel the epoxy start to get warm as it nears time to pour. I poured directly onto the table and spread with a plastic putty knife. It self levels nicely but there are bubbles. Don't panic!
To get the bubbles out, use a heat gun or a blow torch. Constantly move the heat above the epoxy and you will see the bubbles disappear like magic.
Here it is drying. I have only epoxied the inner part of the top where I used Unicorn SPiT. The rest of the table still needs to be sealed.
I applied more SPARKLiNG STAIN to the base and legs right over the Botanics Furniture Paint. This application is more of a glazing and gave amazing depth to the crevices. I used Minwax Oil Based Wipe on Poly Satin to seal base, legs and rim of the table.
Here she is all finished! Isn't she lovely?
Look at those sparkles!
This was a fun project and a special conversation piece of functional art. And it's definitely a DIY for you crafty people who are looking up your game!
