If you posted a picture that could help. We just got a kitchen cabinet from habitat store, put a larger top on it and it could be used in the kitchen as an island with storage.
another idea is a drop down shelf. Or install shelving or a bookcase..all the way up the wall. Vertical-space is very useful.
Bernice is right, use every square inch of space, that includes walls. A floor to ceiling bookcase can be turned into a pantry - add curtains or doors to keep items clean and out of sight. Even a bakers rack, anything you come across that will provide you additional storage. Shop thrift, second hand stores, Habitat Re stores, garage sales, you can always paint them.
Utilize the backs of cabinet doors with wire storage racks, even the back of a kitchen door. Agree with installing shelves as high as you can reach on an otherwise empty wall...very useful. If you HAVE room for an island of any size, go to 2nd hand stores for an inexpensive one, lightly sand and paint a color to accent. If the top is in bad shape, sand a bit harder, or purchase a small piece of sheet metal, like the kitchen counters had years ago! You would have to wrap it around the edges and tack it down, but that's not hard to do, even with arthritis! Add wheels to the bottom so you can move it around wherever you need it!

How about a cart on wheels? They make them now with lots of storage. Like this one: https://smile.amazon.com/Home-Styles-4510-95-Liberty-Kitchen/dp/B01FLRV1M2/ref=sr_1_4?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1525380814&sr=1-4&keywords=kitchen+island&dpID=51zBKINlfZL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
Do you have a picture or two? These suggestions are good, but we really need to see what you have to work with.
I agree with Shore Grandma, please post some pictures so we can see what you see.
