How do I store 14 inch deep albums?

My husband collects movie lobby cards. He stores them in 11 x 14 inch albums/books. I need strong shelves to store them in. I don't want to just build plain shelves. I am not very handy. Does anyone know where I can find some?

Check out the metal shelving units at Menards or other local home improvement stores. I am including a picture. These are easy to put together, come in different widths and heights, black or silver colored, hold a lot of weight with no sagging, are very reasonably priced and are often on sale. I have quite a few of these in my house and garage and they last FOREVER! If you need a flat surface on each shelf so nothing falls through the wire you can add thin plywood cut to fit.

  • Check with scrapbook supply companies. Here's a link to this problem and possible solutions that were offered. One is IKEA's Kallax shelves.

Hi Susan, are you looking for shelving that will be seen and decorative/nice looking or do you just need storage for them in a room that they won't be seen? There are some great utility shelves out there that are great if you are just storing them. If you would like something that looks better because they will be seen I would go with something in wood. You could even find a vintage bookshelf or buffet (as they are usually deep) and paint it to keep them in.

Build stackable cubes out of either 1x12’s or 5/8” plywood.

Home Depot will make (typically) 3 free cuts on their panel saw for you.

Paint or stain, as you see fit.

If you don’t want to buy edge banding for plywood, paint will help hide the edges.

These in the picture are 1950’s record album storage cubes and are clear birch, which is going to be more than pine or plywood, if you can find it.

Pine should be examined carefully for checking & warping.

These in the picture are loose and the base is also loose.

They can be used as end tables, a coffee table, a night stand and with enough of them, a room divider or credenza.

Check marketplace and thrift stores for some you can paint to liven up. You could also add contact paper to the back and shelves. If you find or build plain shelves, you can do the same with them. Even add a decorative trim.

Look for someone in your area that does "Mill Work" Perhaps they can make some nice, strong wood shelves. Plus you will be supporting your local economy.

    HI Susan,,

Normally these would be housed in a record cabinet at ground level because of the weight and for security...................

I'd check a thrift store or facebook marketplace!

    Hello Susan,

Buy or make a purpose build Bookcase! Store them on ground level or in Storage boxes. Stand them on end in an Ottoman Chest that doubles as a Seat, or inside a boxed like Coffee table with Glass Lid maybe? Hope that helps
