When we built our DIY on a budget fire pit last year I wanted to add a top to it. I thought this would make it more functional so that it could double up as an outdoor coffee table too. A few adjustments to a marketplace find later and we’ve done it!

Originally I was going to have my husband make something from pallet wood. But I found this cable reel on marketplace for £10 and realised that this would be perfect since it was ready made and would save hours of work.

We removed the planks from the centre of the structure to take it apart. These will be perfect to use on another project!

To take apart the two circular pieces we used an adjustable spanner to grip the metal bolts and remove them. Two were required to get the grip to undo the bolts. It was so quick and easy to take the whole thing apart.

The diameter of the reel was perfect for the size of the fire pit. It overlaps ever so slightly which I think works for the look I wanted.

I wanted to apply something to protect the wood without altering the colour of it too much. I had some teak oil in the garage and thought this might work perfectly.

I did a patch test to check how the oil would affect the colour of the wood. It made it a little darker which lightened slightly once dry. The oil can be applied with a lint free cloth over the entire surface.

The result! I couldn’t be happier with how this turned out. It has worked perfectly for what I imagined and saved so much time compared with constructing something from scratch.

And because this was a thrift find it did not break the bank to purchase something that was already fit for purpose!

I cannot wait to use this space in warmer weather as it will be so much more functional for when we’re sat out here with food and drink and not using the fire.

For reference this was the space in the autumn when it looked a little more cozy. It looks a little bare here now in the winter but I’ll check back and add updated photos of when this is in use in the spring!

I hope this post inspires you to create your own tabletop or just find uses for items that can be repurposed!
