A simple trunk removal can be to drill holes all over in the top, as deeply as the longest bit will go, then pour epsom salts into it. This will make them rot much faster and you can then remove them easily. Be patient, it takes a season or so to do the job.

    Hi Sally,

Desert Rose is exactly right, good instructions! There are also commercial products available at DIY stores, but Epsom Salts does the job for a lot cheaper and just as well as they do.

DesertRose is correct. This has worked for me many times, but you just need to be patient.

Most stump removal(misnomer) stuff doesn't remove the stump it only kills the live tree stump, you still need to pyhsically remove it from ground more on killing stumps It needs physically removed by grinding out or burning or digging up & pulling out. Holes in stump and wet/water will help decompost stump quicker. Tree stumps last for decades in ground. The holes drilled in stumps have more effect on stump than the stuff you put on/in it. Adding some of the stuff, epsom salt etc. actually will kill bugs, fungus that would help it deteriorate quicker. If you do not have burn restrictions in your area/neighborhood carve/dig/cut out dish/bowl in top of stump and add charcoal briquettes to center to burn it.If you can cut cross cut down or drill holes down into stump from top of stump to ground level this will speed up burn process. Example of burn process Also the heavy salt/epsom salt application will kill surrounding vegetation.

I have either burned them out or you can drill a hole in the center and fill with salt. They will slowly rot that way.

Large amounts of Epsom salts and "Hot" Lime poured into large holes drilled in the stump will hasten their deterioration.
