How do I get rid of ants? ?

It’s been a bad year and they are everywhere!! I’ve baited for months and my husband has resorted to spraying trails outside (which only kills the trail and is temporary). How do I keep them out of my house? I’m out of ideas!

I use Sevin granules on mounds to kill them. As soon as water hits (I spray with a water bottle if rain isn't coming soon), they will start to die.

If you can't find the mounds, diatomaceous earth will also kill them once they come in contact. It must be dry to work but will be effective if wet and then dries out. I put in barbecue sauce plastic bottles (2 in a pack from Dollar Tree) and dispense that way. Put at the entrances at your house and any where else you see them. It will also kill any other pests that have an exoskeleton like water bugs, roaches, and spiders. If you use food grade, it is safe for consumption so you don't have to worry about pets or small children ingesting.

When I worked as a Maintenance Supervisor at a nursing the first floor had an ant problem. My crew use Terro Shake Bag on the perimeter of the building once a week. The ants would take the bait back to the nest and eventually killed them.

    This is what we used

We also used Terro liquid, it takes awhile to kill them off. We even put it where we see a parade of them. They take the bait and carry it back to the colony.

  • I always use a product called Terro. It works every time!

Terro worked for me with the very tiny ants around my home. Reapply after rain to keep the war on!

We use Terro and it works great. Just make sure this isn't in an area where pets or kids can get into it.

The stuff looks like Karo syrup (thick and clear) and the ants take it back to their nest to the queen.

I’ve always used that in the past and have put a lot of it out again this year. I’ve always been good at identifying where the nests are. I am still getting overrun by ants though.

Thanks for the ideas. I’m going to try a number of them and report back!

  • Indoors use Terro liquid bait traps and outdoors use diatomaceous earth. They both work near instantly and the latter is all natural and pet safe.

Find the nest, that's the only way!

I originally got ants from a friend staying with me who baked cookies every day.... little drops of honey everywhere. So periodically they invaded over the years.... I used non-toxic Ant spray from Victors, Eco-Logic and Eco-Smart that would work on killing them and repelling them but I had to be vigilant.

After finding a couple carpenter ants outside, I decided to spray the foundation up to the wood siding to repel them..... using a traditional poison Termite & Carpenter Ant spray in Spring and Fall. This had the unintended consequence of permanently making the small sweet ants disappear.

Hi Ramona, hope this helps you out.

In a disposable container, make a mixture of half a spoon of borax, 10 spoons of sugar and a cup of lukewarm water. Dip old rags of clothes or cotton in this mixture and place them in areas of ants to permanently get rid of ants. Once done, dispose the container.

    Hi,

I'm not able to see what others have replied to you, so here goes. Unless you live in a very warm climate, they should be all gone for now, but they, just like Jesus Christ, Douglas McArthur, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, will be back. (And I'm very serious about Jesus Christ! The others, not so much...)

Try Amdro, and use it just as the container recommends. I have found it to be effective inside and out. Otherwise, I would try pouring a molten metal , like aluminum or copper into the anthill. See "ant colony casting" in whatever you use to look stuff up. When it cools, dig it up, and you will have a beautiful piece of art! Do not try this, if you are accident prone, have stumbled and fallen in the last 14 years, dropped and broken a nice dish in this lifetime, or are in any other way clumsy. But an ant hill casting can sell for hundreds of dollars! Be careful!
