They will slither away on their own. With using something like moth balls, you run the risk of poisoning other animals including dogs, cats. They eat mice, frogs birds, and other small reptiles. Let them be.

Snakes are the good guys and come and go. It is your choice to like them or not. They are very beneficial to gardens and to keep nature in balance.

You can make sure that any long grass around your home is trimmed to the ground since snakes like to hide in the tall grass. Keep any window wells clear of debris-dry grass, leaves, etc. My window wells have rock on the bottom and I clean them out spring and fall. I find snakes, mice and salamanders on occasion in the window wells! Expect that if you have a garden with lots of thick foliage you may find some friendly snakes slithering in and out. They are really not harmful--it's just the fear factor when they surprise you.

I agree with Kathy They are eating some other creatures you probably don't want in your yard either. Please don't poison them, or use sticky traps(cruel too)as unpleasant as people feel about them they are important to our eco-systyem. if you are really creeped out get a live trap(online) and catch them then release them away from your house, or call exterminator but make sure they don't kill what they catch either. Moth balls are a poison for most creatures and your soil even you,and it's a myth that they repel anything from the yard/garden unless you completely cover your entire yard with them. the same with spices and oils that burn any living creatures they don't get the burn til after they get in area and don't associate it with staying out of area it just hurts them later when they clean themselves or after they have crawled thru the area, it's just cruel burning their noses, mouths, eyes,& private parts.Sticky traps are cruel too snakes or other animals get on them and die very slowly usually from dehydration it takes days and you need to pick them up & remove while animal is alive stuck on trap unless you leave it lay there to die.

I know that they have a purpose, I just really don't like them! I don't believe in animal cruelty so no worries there.I will try just getting things so they will go elsewhere. Thank you for your help.

  • If your yard is totally fenced, you can install snake fencing. The garden snakes you have are harmless and good for your garden. Learn about them to get over your fear. I have to deal with rattlesnakes and it looks like we are going to have a bumper crop of them this year . . . My phone will be ringing constantly!
