They hate CHALK !! yes--school chalk--I crush it and put where needed--I also draw on rims of my clay pots--they will not cross the line--I have gone as far as draw on my deck railing so they could not get to my hummingbird feeder. WORKS !

Try a product called Terro.
You can find Terro in DIY stores, when the ants arrive and form a parade actoss your deck or patio, just put the Terro in their pathway.
