Squirrels have an extraordinary ability to get into small areas when they are searching for food. Squirrels can also scramble up high, and jump great distances. Don't be too disappointed if the red pepper flakes do not keep them away from your garden.

I think it really depends on what kind of critters and what kind of garden you're protecting. If it's flowers you can plant things that your critters aren't fond of...there are several. Veggies are harder to deter!

It depends on what they are. Often a fence is your best defense against animals. Also vinegar-soaked rags.

A fence can work well. Depends on what you’re trying to keep out. Rabbits? What critter do you have?
Personally I like raised beds, they keep out a lot of animals, if your garden is ground level, chicken wire fence is very effective.

Additionally you could design your own to meet your own gardens dimensions. Zip tying the plastic or metal mesh fencing might be options.
If squirrels are your particular problem this plastic fencing might not be an option. Metal fencing could be required.

Depending what you have, you can add plants or scents to deter them. The best way is to add a fence.
