One of my flower gardens that we’re cleaning up and replanting. Weeds were present through plastic tarp when we bought house. This method does not work. I’ve used the cloth type with breathable material for gardens. Nope, doesn’t work either. We are getting older and don’t have time, flexibility or balance to be in the flower gardens. Please help! Oh, also tried pine straw.

    Hi BonBon,

My name is Linda. Once you get all of the weeds out, it's a good idea to use a pre-emergent weed control like Preen. This will help prevent new weeds from growing. The problem is that weed seeds are spread by the wind and by birds so it's hard to keep them out. Any time you see a weed starting, spray it with plain vinegar or boiling water. That should help kill any weeds as soon as they start growing. The Preen will also help. You just have to keep up with it and watch for new weeds daily. Wishing you the best.

  • Looks like you have a start on it. Landscape fabric, newspaper or cardboard topped with a couple inches of mulch will work. No sun = no grow. You will never ever be completely free of weeds as they are spread by wind, wildlife and people. The weeds that do appear on top of the mulch are shallow rooted and easy to pluck.

I use newspaper. I line the flower beds with the newspaper and then place mulch over it. Do that whenever you add new mulch. Works like a charm.

Interesting. Might just have to give that a try. Thank you for responding.

I covered the area with leaf and lawn bags it was easy to lay out then placed pebbles or mulch on top once I week I soak or spray area with water and vinegar to keep anything from growing. So far I am winning the battle 2 years
