We spray Listerine in the area before we sit down and it works great.
DEET spray applied to exposed skin works well. Wash off after you return indoors for the night.
Use citronella candles or torches around you. I would also use a good repellant if they are real bad. Up here, the mosquitoes seem to be pretty much gone, but then again it is chilly already. All you can do is hope the breeze is enough to keep them away, too.
Patio fans, I have two of them. Works wonderfully. You can also have plants that repel mosquitos too.
