How can I safely get rid of grass growing on my driveway?

I had a driveway poured using crushed asphalt, the asphalt being cheaper plus it packed down well and looked great. The depth poured was approximately 3 inches thick. Even so the grass inevitably has taken over. I want my driveway back but I’m not sure how to accomplish this in an environmentally safe way. I have a dog and there are several other animals that roam free in the neighborhood. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. The driveway is a half oval, approximately 80 - 90 feet long by 8 feet wide.

  • Here's what I use: Take a spray bottle and cover the bottom with salt and fill it up with vinegar. Add a few drops of dish soap and shake. Spray on the grass.

You can keep killing the grass until the cows come home. But if you want to permanently prevent it from encroaching on the driveway, you will have to install a border barrier.

A dug in border is the way to go. Timbers and such will not prevent the encroachment. I would go with steel.

Its a frustrating situation- I understand completely. We had a pea gravel driveway that we used either chemicals or a weed dragon on. A weed dragon flame heat is likely too intense sadly. We solved our aggravating situation by a concrete driveway installation. Hope you find a solution!

I use one cup of vinegar, one cup of salt to two gallons water in a garden sprayer. Saturate the drive/grass till dripping.

    2 cups white vinegar

    ¼ cup salt

    Squirt of dawn

Mix in a spray bottle. If you have a larger area, you can mix in a garden sprayer with larger quantities. Use when it will not be raining for a few hours so that it isn’t washed away.

    Use this formula

Epsom Salt poured on the grass then mix 1 gallon white vinegar with 1/4 cup of Dawn. Do not buy Dollar store Dawn it is not as thick as the dawn in the grocery store. You can spray that directly onto the salted grass and it will kill the weeds.

Hi Janet, there are quite a few recipes you can use to kill the grass but it will come back. For a longer term solution you should ideally put some kind of edging along the drive way to keep the grass from encroaching. Here are some ideas - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shElS9AV_f8

All the vinegar/salt/Dawn recipes will work to kill the grass but it has to be done repeatedly, depending on the weather (rain/temperature, etc.). A physical barrier would be best, but sadly you'll still need to use a weed or grass killing solution or it will encroach on the hard barrier.

You need to build divider ...small line of blocks outlining your driveway
