Painting Your Cabinets: 5 Questions You Always Wanted To Ask A Pro

AK has been working with our professional painter / faux finisher Summer of Faux by Design for many, many (many) years. Together we have created all the beautiful kitchens you see here - and MANY more! Painting cabinets is such popular subject these days, we talked to Summer and asked her all the questions we get most on Hometalk & Facebook!
-What kinds of cabinets are best for painting?
"Smooth woods yield a smoother finish. Grainy oak often leaves a shadow texture of the grain but any kind of cabinet can be painted, even those plastic thermofoil. You just have use the appropriate products and primers on each substrate."
-How can you tell if your cabinets are in good enough shape to paint?
"You'd be surprised what can be salvaged! I have encountered some really beat-up cabinets that had swelled edges and deep cracks and recommended just replacing them. And yet, the client opted to paint! Sanding on the swelling and wood putty on the cracks before priming and painting and even I was impressed with result."

what kind of paint, and do I need to sand first?
    • @April Pfau - Although we would recommend a high quality paint like Sherwinn Williams, we have heard that you can really use almost any. The most important thing is to sand and to prime! You want to spend money on the best primer you can! Sanding is mostly to even the surface, remove any peeling and then make a better texture for the primer to adhere to!
