Hi Cathy, you don't mention what finish you want to accomplish. Either painted or a wood look finish are possible. Take your time with your prep, and use a good sealer for laminate before you apply a new finish. Kilz has one that works well. If you want to do a faux wood, there are tools for wood graining:
