I would not paint the eating surface due to the high wear and tear and will require a lot of touch ups over time. Stain the top and then paint the base. Seal the top with a few coats of polyurethane, scuffing between coats with fine steel wool and wipe with denatured alcohol.

Hi Susan,

Use Chalk paint to do the base and seal with Clear or coloured wax. Or use Gloss paint if you want it to be more hardwearing.

I've painted kitchen tables in the past and no matter what I use to seal them they get damaged and chip. If you're going to do it, I highly suggest getting a glass topper cut to protect it.
