How to Attach Any Pull to a Ceiling Fan Chain

3 Materials
30 Minutes

I love customizing my home decor, and I had made up my mind that I was going to have these old-fashioned skeleton keys hanging from the ceiling fans in my sewing room. But the keys only had a loop at the top to hang them, so how was I supposed to clip them onto the ceiling fan's ball chain? I decided to make my own solution.

I came up with 3 different solutions that each worked really well to attach the keys to the ball chain. I tested them all, so take your pick:

  • A small stud earring.
  • A regular straight pin, like you’d use for sewing.
  • A sequin pin with a small metal bead threaded onto it.

Whichever solution you choose, the little ball part should be about as big as the balls that make up the chain. You can see in the picture that the stud earring and sequin pin/bead were perfect for the larger chain, and the straight pin was just right for the smaller chain. Since all of these things come in different sizes, just choose something that matches your particular chain, and you’re good to go! (I should note that I’ve come across some really thin, flimsy sewing pins, so pick one that’s pretty sturdy.)

I cut the pins with a pair of needle-nosed pliers from a set of jewelry-making pliers, since the pins were much longer than I needed.

Then I used the pliers to bend the wire part of the pins/earrings around the loops of my skeleton keys.

The end result is a little ball attached to the loop at the top of the key.

Now, the stud/pinhead/bead pops right into the ball chain connector! Woohoo!

I think they look FAN-tastic! (See what I did there?) They haven't loosened as I pull on them, either; they seem pretty sturdy.

Now, what do you want to hang from YOUR ceiling fans?

My guest bedroom is a beachy/coastal theme. I want to replace the pull on my fan with a sea shell. Do you have a good idea of how to do that without it pulling off? I’ve thought about using Gorilla glue.

Hi Kathy, here is a link to a tutorial with a really great method to make seashells fan pulls. A small conch or cowrie shell would look amazing with this technique! I really love beach decor, I have a coastal-inspired bathroom 😁
