Get a can of Cool Seal - read the directions, it will tell you if you can. I've seen it done, but it looks like what it is - painted shingles. Good idea for a hot roof though.

  • Why would they use black shingles in Florida? Yikes! I would completely reroof the entire house and add attic fans while you are at it. If that is an option for you.

You can get someone to use the new spray foam and have the space between the rafters in the attic covered....it will definitely cut your cost of electricity.

One of my friends has the same roof as yours and last year he coated his roof with liquid EPDM. It effectively reflects sun rays, UV rays and ozone, hence, provides cooling effects. Its durability and resistance to weathering makes it an excellent choice for roofs that are exposed to harsh weather conditions. I also have my best experience with EPDM Butyl Liquid rubber roof coating that gives me further premium protection from all kinds of external harmful elements.

Why don't you insulate your roof area as that will reduce the electic bills. You can appply Roof fix straight on to roof that is clean and dry and that will seal it.

Kool Seal is an elastomeric so no it can’t come in contact with an asphalt-based substrate coating it will dissolve it. One of my friends has an asphalt shingle roof and he used ‘’ Liquid roof” coating over it. It’s ozone and UV resistant and has very high properties to reflect the suns sun rays. It is a unique solvent-based coating so it will actually chemically cross link to the shingles. and it has high tensile strength and a 500% elongation( so it expands and contracts as the temperatures change.

  • It's possible to apply stylish paint to your shingles, but it's always a good idea to consult with local roofing professionals.

Hi Pam, it's not advisable to put a sealer over the shingles, but you can get up there and paint them a lighter color like white, grey or whatever color would look good
