Depends on the existing surface being installed on. Concrete can be installed over with just a good cleaning. You can install ceramic tile over ceramic tile. Any other serface like wood or wood subfloor requires cement board put down with mortar and screws before the tile is installed. Hope this helps

There is no easy way to install ceramic tile on a floor! But that does not mean you should not do it. And this is not a task that can be explained in a few sentences.

Make sure you have the proper tools. Trowel, spacers, thinset, grout, tile cutter, grout sealer...and if you have to cut out a corner to go around a cabinet you will need a Drammel tool to grind a cut in 2 different directions...think of a square torn our of the corner of a sheet of paper...that kind of cut one way and then another way will be required.

Keep in mind that if this is a space the cannot be unused for 24 hours until the thinset dries, you will have to do it in sections. If you have small children, you will want to make sure they are confined away from this project or out of the house for a few days.
