Hi Sean,
Peel & stick tiles should stick better. Did you wipe down your ceiling with TSP cleaner? Your ceiling needs to be very clean in order for the tiles to stick properly. I hope that helps. Wishing you the best.

My go-to adhesive for any construction materials is Loctite. However, you can buy adhesive by the bucket intended for ceiling tiles at Home Depot and Lowes.
I agree with the above, but "liquid nails" may help.
Sean, peel & stick tiles are made for floors, where the weight of your footsteps will usually keep them in place. If you are trying to use them as sound absorbers (popular in the 1970s), then, as you have discovered, you need a stronger adhesive. I recommend using wood glue or construction glue, using the squirt bottle to apply a W or S shape on the tile. Then you will have to hold each tile for a minute so the glue will get tacky, and another minute with the tile against the wall so it starts sticking. Against the ceiling, longer. You are fighting gravity here, so I strongly suggest you also staple each tile into place, in all corners and the middle. You will not be able to remove the tiles without hurting the paint or other surface under it. Best wishes ☺️
