Hi Cheryl, I am not sure if they are attached or separate but if they are separate I used mine as a place for my plants. I put a large wooden try on top and then a little terrarium box with all of my plants in and around it.

I used mine to sit outgoing packages, incoming mail, keys, tablet with grocery list. Mine was the lift up top all wooden. If it is the half and half with metal legs, change the color to suit your decorating style. Leave markers and pen for quick notes inside. I put a coat of poly on to preserve where the kids scratched their names etc. I also have and extra chair that I use to put a plant on. You could also put a vase on it with or without flowers.

You could also use the desk to put winter hats and gloves by the door.

You can sand it down and re-stain it or you can paint it. There are many stencil patterns to make it look like it belongs in a school. Make sure you seal it with poly.

I'd suggest stripping off all the old paint, sanding it down, and then applying multiple coats of linseed oil, or at the very least, some varnish. But I still prefer linseed oil. I think it would look more authentic and just plain beautiful. I love the look of natural wood. My son and I once read on https://papersowl.com/examples/frankenstein/ a fascinating story. In it, the scientist Frankenstein tried to give new life to something that had died. We decided that it was unethical when it came to living beings. But when it comes to items we used or that belonged to our parents, we owe it to them to give them a second life. Nowadays, people just throw everything away and clutter up the earth, but it’s so much better to properly repair something.
