Macrame Heart Bunting
Seems like we’ve barely taken our Christmas decorations down, and we’re already planning Valentine’s Day. But it’s just around the corner. So I decided to use up some of my leftover macrame cording to make this sweet Valentine’s day macrame heart bunting. I also decided to ditch the traditional pink and red and use this soft taupe colored rope. It makes the garland more versatile if I want to use it for a wedding shower or other events.

supplies needed:
- 3mm macrame rope
- masking tape
step 1 – lark’s head knots
Cut one piece of cording at least 60 inches long, or longer if you prefer. This will be your working cord, onto which you will connect all the macrame hearts.
To make the first heart, cut 8 pieces of cording, each measuring 46 inches in length. Tape the ends of all cords to prevent fraying while working; you will remove the tape when finished. Now tie each of those 8 cords onto the long working cord using Lark’s Head Knots, as shown below.
step 2 – square knots
Because the finished size of the each heart (including its tassels) is approximately 4″ x 9″, you can easily use a clipboard as your working space. Secure the rope under the clip as shown below.
About 1 inch down from the Lark’s Head Knots, begin your first row. Starting with the 3rd individual cord from the left, make a Square Knot, skip the next 4 individual cords then make another Square Knot, then skip the final 2 cords. This completes row 1.
Row 2: beginning with the first 4 cords on the left, make a Square Knot. Continue making three more Square Knots, as shown below.
Row 3: beginning with the 3rd cord from the left, make 3 Square Knots, leaving the last two cords hanging. Row 4: beginning with the first cord on the left, make a row of 4 Square Knots.
Row 5: repeat row 3. Row 6: beginning with the fifth cord from the left, make 2 consecutive Square Knots.
For the final row, using the center 4 cords, make a Square Knot.
finishing touches
Finally, trim the ends of the cords angling down to a point. Your first heart is done! Repeat the process to add as many hearts to the garland as you wish. Then enjoy your macrame heart bunting.

I LOVE this! I have five adult children and I have not gotten them Valentines gifts since they had their own families. I think this year is the year to start making them things like this. I love this.
