Creating an Accent Wall Using Wood Shims
I love wood walls, and have created lots of them, including a very cool wood slat wall with LED lights.
One day I went out to dinner close to my house and noticed this amazing wood wall feature along the back wall of the restaurant. I wanted to recreate the look of this amazing wall that fell in love with!
I decided to recreate it in a property I'm renovating with only DIY projects! You can check out other projects in that renovation here.
I didn't want to spend a lot of time cutting pieces of wood myself, so I purchased various sizes of wood shims instead! I stained these using a water-based stain and applied varying amounts of stain to the wood shims.
Using liquid nails, I applied the wood shims to the wall, butting up against the window trim on one side, and going all the way to the door frame on the other side.
This gave me a nice defined area to work in.
I laid the wood shims on top of each other so as to create texture and depth. I also made sure to vary the colors throughout.
When I had gaps, I covered these with some of the smaller shims. It really made for a lot of visual interest.
I cut the shims to fit around the light switch and just worked right up next to the switch plate.
Here's how it looked when it was complete! I love it and next I'll be working on adding some artwork to the wall so that it creates a perfect backdrop and design feature.

Texture and pattern makes a nice look, I"m inspired, Thinking to try mid- sized wall art piece, attach shims onto thin cardboard and then attach to the wall- Temp alternative for us renters out there. Thanks for sharing your work! 😍

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
Could this be done on a curved wall gluing the wood vertically?
It's very pretty but how are you ever going to get it down when your tired of it? I believe I would have put wallpaper under it before I would put liquid nail directly on my wall.
What style were you going for? It's a cool treatment, but very rustic and cabin-like. Did you mean to contrast with the traditional molding below?
