Use Mosaic to Create With Your Old Crockery!
I adore using vintage crockery in art and it’s so beautiful I hate to see it go waste into landfill or be unseen hidden unloved at back of someone’s Cupboard. I had some left over wall ceramic tiles and crockery central plate piece from another project and tried to see how I could bring them altogether into a nice wall art piece.
I score and snap some narrow strips from the wall tile I like using a simple tool available in DIY stores. I like using wheeled tile nippers cut them into even size price ready for a border.
I have a beautiful ceramic bird plate piece which I sand and glue with PVA fairly centrally on to substrate backer board.
I glue the pieces of tile around outer edge and leave to dry whilst planning the next part.
I decide to pick up some pale green tile for inner border that compliments the central vintage ceramic design well.
I wanted to create texture and so when I found these lovely ceramic rectangle tiles knew they would work so well around the central china bird scene.
I fill in the background with smaller ceramic pieces of birds theme darker blue triangles cut from wall tile with wheeled tile nippers and it really helps the piece to come together.
I use some dark paint to white grout powder tans water and mix to a peanut butter consistency. Spread over the tiles when completely dry and firm. Working into grooves. Then wipe off excess with damp cloth.
It really comes to life and becomes such a beautiful art for home.
