Cleaning Rust Off Metal

My old bike was looking very neglected, so hubby decided to give it a clean. He tried expensive rust removers and polishes, but none made much difference, so then he remembered an old trick he used many many years ago on his motor bike rims... bet you wont guess what he used!! Coke and Foil, or metal wrap.. we didn't have any "Coke" just "Diet Coke" ...
Empty some "Coke" into a old cup or tin.. doesn't mater what size.. get some foil cooking wrap.. just a large sheet will do.. have a look at all the rust on the rim..
Scrunch up the foil and dip into the coke, then SCRUB! SCRUB! He used a glove after a while, to protect his fingers from all the rubbing and dipping..
It DOES take quite a bit of elbow grease!! ( not sure if that is an Aussie only saying BUT it means rubbing A LOT) ... the marks remain but the rust has been removed..
This is a before shot of one of the metal pedal posts.. shows rust more clearly..
After rubbing with that" Elbow Grease" that I told you about.. Haa Haa ..still pitted but no rust... this bike is about 25 years old.. would do a much better job on more resent or lighter affected rust areas..I Think?? IT'S WORTH A TRY>> especially if Hubby will do it for you..!!!
Suggested materials:
  • "Diet Coke"
  • Alfoil " Aluminium foil baking wrap   (any supermarket)

WOW! That is a great tip! Thanks for sharing. 'Elbow Grease' is a phrase that is definitely in use in the US...matter of fact it was one of my dads favorite things to say when we were kids and faced with cleaning something really 'grungy'! Reading it again brought a smile and some happy memories!
