Heirloom Review: Rouge Vif D'etampes

This post is part of a series of heirlooms that I'm reviewing that we grew for the 2013 year. I'm becoming more and more fond of heirlooms as the gardening years go by. Sure hybrids have lots to offer for that peak yield performance or disease resistance, but what about taste? What about looks? Heirlooms offer character to your harvests and are a fantastic way to ensure seed diversity as our current mono-agriculture has vastly reduced seed genetics. Many heirlooms are too fragile for our modern day grocery transportation so they offer gardeners a unique opportunity to explore wondrous tastes that have almost vanished in our current food supply.

MJ Hughes on May 18, 2015I have grown these for three seasons and love them. Sometimes they develop a beautiful deep green with orange highlights. The are sweet, great tasting and are good keepers. The seed can be purchased on line at several places that specialize in organic/healthy/heirloom vegetables. Just google the Rouge d'Etampe seeds
