I just recently inherited two occasional chairs from my mom. We moved her in with us. There is now furniture in her home not getting used. I needed a couple of chairs for my living room so I asked my mom if I could have the chairs. I wanted a foot stool for each chair but did not want to go and spend money on new ones as I knew there had to be something in my house I could up cycle. Sure enough as looked around the house my eyes landed on 3 dining chairs. The 4th chair to this group had met its demise. As looked at the chairs my mind sees a chair with the back cut off and the legs lowered. Off to the work shop, I go with these 2 chairs. I already had everything I needed in my work shop so I had did not have to spend any money.
Here is the chair before the change. I had refurbished these chairs several years ago but, with the 4th longer in existence, it was time to use the other 3 for something else.
Now I must apologize, I got so engrossed in the project I forgot to take pics along the way. The seat was removed before any work was started. The back was removed using a skill saw. The legs had to be shortened 2 inches. I then sanded all the wood. I then used a paint that I thinned to a watery consistency and applied with a damp cloth. The first coat was a beige. The second coat a burnt orange and then another coat of beige. After the paint dried I applied a coat of Howard Restore-A-Finish, in a light oak finish. I rubbed that and applied a coat of Howard Bees wax. Put the seat back on, stood back and took a look. There was a spot on each side where the back was cut off. It was a small hole. I decided to put a drawer pull over those holes. It's different but I like the outcome. What a way to use a couple of old chairs. As I say "Everything old is new again".
Enjoyed the project?

Brilliant! And it's already made to sit on, so no worries if they do! I love this - will be looking for chairs at my fave lil "junk" store. Already have a place in mind for the backs :-)

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
What did you do with the back of the chair? That looked like it could be turned into something great as well.
My question is, what do you do with the back's of the chairs?
The backs of the chairs make great hangers for towels in the bathroom..........or hangers anywhere??????? Don't ya think?
