Halloween is just round the corner you guys!!! Have you started working on your costume yet? If not, and you're still looking for an attention-grabbing DIY Halloween costume, you've found the right gal.
I've written an easy no-sew step by step instruction for you on how to make a set of adorable and wonderfully sparkly butterfly wings (that will also work great for fairy wings - just sayin').
What you can expect: I'll be showing you here the basics on how to craft this wonderful set of wings. Before getting crafty, I recommend that you hop on over to my blog Craftify My Love for a very detailed description.
For your convenience I'll be adding links to my sparkly fairy wings tutorial and an easy DIY Antennae Headband further down in this post, as this is obviously THE MUST-HAVE accessory for every butterfly nowadays, right? ;-)
Ok, let's get to it, shall we?
What you'll be needing - The Basics:
- wire
- pliers
- pantyhose
- duct tape
- acrylic paint
- glitter
- ribbon
- silk flowers
Of course you can go over and beyond when decorating your wings (that's what I did, lol ). For a more detailed supplies list, go visit my blog Craftify My Love. You'll find a link at the end of this post.
Step 1: You'll be starting by bending four wings in a shape to your liking. Try to make them as even as you can but don't stress too much bout it. Crafting should be fun!
Step 2: Next you'll be taping a set of two wings together (this way the sharp pointy ends of the wire won't rip the pantyhose) and start covering them in pantyhose.
Step 3: Continue with the other set of wings and once done, tape them both together with duct tape. Don't worry about the duct tape looking all Mc Gyver and such, you'll be covering it up in the end with ribbon and silk flowers. You can also choose to do this Step 3 after decorating your wings. But pay attention if you are planning on doing a symmetrical pattern.
Step 4: Now it's time to give your wings some detail! You can burn wholes into the pantyhose using incense sticks. Paint them to your liking and add as much glitter glue or rhinestones as you like.
Step 5: Even if you're impatient like I am, give the paint and (glitter) glue enough time to dry in-between steps. After all you want your wings to look superb and grab a lot of compliments while trick-or-treating, right?
Step 6: After you're done decorating your wings to your liking, go find matching silk flowers and arrange them on top of your wings. If you are satisfied with the outcome, you can start fixing them to your wings using ribbon.
Step 7: Leave some long strands of ribbon floating down the back of your costume (like this little butterly in the picture above). You'll be using two strands of ribbon to strap the wings to your back. A detailed description can be found on my blog. Click the link at the bottom of this post!
Step 8: Basically you're done now! But if you want to add more drama (see picture below) you can wear matching wigs and add a large piece of organza to flutter about in your costume. Basically you'll knot it to your wings with some of the ribbon. This step is also explained in detail on my blog.
Step 9: Can you see how stunning this dress-up idea can be as a group or family costume? And did you notice the DIY antennae headbands we were wearing? You'll find a simple tutorial for these on my blog, too.Variations: Please note that you can let your creativity run loos in this project! You can bend the wings shape to your liking, decorate them with whatever paint, glitter, ribbons, flowers or pantyhose you like. If you want to read up on some techniques I used and find more inspiration, go check out my other tutorial on how to craft sparkly fairy or butterly wings.
