There is sometimes big money (to collectors) in old buttons... and it is sometimes surprising which ones are the most collectible. Do some research.. before you try and cash in.. or sell them.
I agree with Marty!
For buttons that aren't collectible (I love buttons and have hundreds), there are many craft ideas. One of the fun things I've done is give my granddaughter a metal tin full of fun buttons. We do lots of crafts with them. Here are some links for crafts:

Are you looking to sell or do you need ideas for uses?
I use buttons for jewelry and wall art.
send them to me! You can make Pillows with buttons all over. Put them in a jar for display. I'm a freak and I love buttons. Just thinking of where it was. Who wore it on the clothing is interesting to me. I'm a button lover.
Not sure what your question is....but buttons are great for lots of things. Many of them are collectible. Check your local area for antique shops, etc that can value them for you. Buttons are also great for lots of different crafts. You can glue them onto various objects, use them to make jewelry pieces, sew them onto items as accents, etc. Have fun!
As long as they aren't considered collectors items or antiques, use them to create art or to adorn throw pillows. Just "google" it and you can see some awesome ideas
I used my grandmothers French and German buttons (ivory, wooden, hand carved etc) to make heart pillows for family and friends...you take any material you want and in fabric pencil outline a heart on it then fill in heart with buttons....you can put on year if wedding present...and you can sew buttons on several at a time use carpet thread to make them sturdier! Enjoy
What button is? The seed of the cotton?
My best friend sold her collection for $250. Don't know if that would be of interest to you or not. She had 100,000 of them and said no 2 were alike

I would glue them on a stiff canvas and frame the canvas. You can glue them horizontally, in circles, using different shades of one color or... if one is very beautiful, you can use this one in middle of canvas. I personally love to do stuff like that. People can now buy your art work!
To use the buttons yourself, I'll just remind you of a couple of ideas for flat buttons you have probably seen before. You can glue buttons on just about any flat surface, and some curved ones. You can make sewing boxes, memory boxes, vases, and canisters, for instance, with just buttons and glue.
Button dolls need elastic, a thread spool for the head, and about 100-200 flat buttons each. These are not for babies who might swallow the buttons, but 3-5-yr-olds enjoy the dolls. And they certainly make good Americana/farmhouse decorations.
Best wishes 😇💞
If you have enough, you could string them into garland for your Christmas tree. Even if you cannot use this type of garland, maybe your local nursing homes and hospitals could.
Display some in interesting jars as accent pieces around the house. Maso jars work well, too.

Your question was cut off but I pulled up a page full of ideas for using buttons just in case: https://www.pinterest.com/buttonartmuseum/button-project-ideas/?lp=true

I bought a inexpensive necklace and bracelet made of buttons.
You didn't say how many are a "lot" but I do know that buttons are commonly used in elementary schools to teach kids math skills such sorting, grouping, counting, arranging largest to smallest, similarities, differences, etc.
They are small enough not too take up too much space, easy to store, and kids are attracted to their tactile characteristics.
If you are sure that none in your stash are collectors quality, as Marty indicated, then I would suggest that you donate them to a local school, especially one is a less advantaged neighbourhood. Teachers are always welcome to new or novel materials, as so often there is little budget for these kinds of resources.
You can use small ones to make gift tags for Christmas presents.
